OpenAI Pauses New ChatGPT Pro 20X Sign-Ups After Astra Demand Surge

One day before OpenAI halted enrollment for its highest-usage ChatGPT plan, Thibault Sottiaux — known as Tibo — warned that the company might have to stop taking new Pro subscribers if extraordinary demand for Astra continued.
In a September 9 post on X, Sottiaux said Astra demand was unlike anything he had seen through earlier periods of rapid growth. He said that protecting service for existing users was the priority, and that a temporary pause on new Pro subscriptions could follow.
Demand for Astra is really unprecedented. We're pulling all the levers possible to sustain the demand, but I've not seen anything like it until now and we went through very steep growth before. Priority will always be to keep excellent service for existing users, but we might…
That warning became policy the next day. OpenAI has temporarily paused new sign-ups and upgrades for its $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro 20X plan, a capacity-control move that leaves existing subscribers, the $100 Pro tier, and the API available.
The company's support documentation says the pause began on September 10 and applies to upgrades from Free, Go, Plus, and Pro $100. Existing Pro 20X subscriptions are not affected. Customers who cancel or complete a downgrade during the pause cannot buy the $200 tier again until OpenAI lifts the restriction, according to the support notice.
Sottiaux linked the decision directly to the demand created by Astra. In his announcement, he said the $200 subscriptions put the most strain on OpenAI's systems and that the company was taking the smallest step it believed would preserve broad access.
To make sure our current users have an incredible experience and continued access to Astra, we are going to pause subscriptions to our $200 Pro plan. These put the most strain on our systems and we wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest… https://t.co/WhLEm3HBL7
The message is notable because it turns a demand warning into a concrete product constraint: OpenAI is temporarily declining new revenue from its highest-usage consumer tier in order to protect the experience of current users. Sottiaux said other plans and the API remain available, and that the company is adding capacity as quickly as possible.
For users considering a plan change, the practical distinction is important. The pause does not cancel an existing Pro 20X subscription. But a subscriber who lets that tier expire may not be able to restore it while the enrollment pause remains in place. OpenAI has not published a date for reopening new Pro 20X sign-ups.
The decision also illustrates a wider constraint for agent products: the price of a subscription is not necessarily a guarantee that capacity can scale instantly with demand. As longer-running, tool-using agent workloads become more common, service operators may need to manage availability as carefully as model capability.
